General Manager (Healthcare)

About the Job

A medical diagnostics institution in Ghana seeks to hire a General Manager (Healthcare). The General Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing operational and strategic goals and policies for the company, managing all commercial operations.

S/he will select, supervise and provide leadership to all staff in consultation with the Medical Director, managing the clinic on a day-to-day basis.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Assurance

  • Organize, supervise and monitor services provided by the institution according to the highest standards
  • Understand and evaluate electronic medical record programs, such as PACS/RIS, as well as clinical practices, procedures and techniques in the area of diagnostic imaging (incl. safety precautions)
  • Ensure that guidelines for accreditation, quality assurance and safe patient care are met


  • Manage all non-medical aspects of the center, and coordinate the medical aspects in collaboration with the Medical Director
  • Lead the development of goals, objectives, expansion, policies, procedures and priorities
  • Work with the Board, by advising where necessary, to build the center into the best diagnostic facility in the country
  • Negotiate contracts with vendors, consultants and/or organizations for services of the center, and also administer and monitor contracts

Human Resource

  • Manage all staff and personnel issues with the exception of staff who report directly to the Medical Director
  • Create, manage, and supervise optimum performance of staff, and communicate effectively with administrative, medical and clinical staff.

Sales & Business Development

  • Develop and implement sales and marketing strategies of the center's products and services to key customers such as medical specialists, general physicians, corporate organizations, diplomatic missions and health insurance companies
  • Build a medical diagnostics business with presence in different locations in Ghana and West Africa, and providing first class laboratory and imaging services

Finance: Manage and supervise the budgeting process, financial reporting, and management reporting

Client Relations: Work tactfully, sympathetically and effectively with various types and conditions of patients


Qualification and Requirements

  • Must have a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or a related field
  • Experience in business and financial management, and planning in West Africa
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in personnel management, in areas such as; hiring, supervision, evaluation and benefits administration in West Africa
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience working with board of directors and committees
  • Must have effective problem-solving and mediation skills
  • Experience as a manager in a medical institution is highly desired

Thorough knowledge of:

  • Health care industry in Africa, including developing and implementing marketing strategies to promote the facility and its services
  • Human Resources management including; operational staff management, policy development, performance management and reporting
  • Financial and administrative management and reporting, and the ability to manage the company’s budget and finances

Working knowledge of:

  • Business administration in a healthcare company, including; budget forecasting and control, inventory control, and management information systems
  • Principles and practices of program management, including; program planning, implementation and evaluation
  • Laws, regulations, accreditation standards and safety guidelines applicable to the business.
  • Principles, practices, trends and technological developments in diagnostic imaging in Africa
  • Computer software such as Microsoft Office.
